New Zealand Conference

Three Indigenous WCE staff members attended the He Manawa Whenua Indigenous Methodology Research conference in Hamilton, Aotearoa New Zealand in 30th June – 2nd July 2015.

Opportunities

The event provided an opportunity for Indigenous peoples to share their research aspirations, methodologies and outcomes. The conference aligns with the Maori saying “He pukenga wai he nohonga tangata he nohonga tangata he pukenga kōrero” which means “bodies of water, bodies of people, bodies of knowledge”.

Over 100 presenters

The conference hosted over 100 presenters and enabled researchers to share cultural ways of working including using song and dance during presentations and as an introduction to speakers.

About the conference

International Indigenous presenters from North America, Canada, Taiwan and Hawaii shared research on a range of Indigenous methodologies and research from a broad field including language, healing, education, employment, histories, sustainability and economic development.

WCE representatives Peta Fraser, Matalena Tofa and Donna Robbins presented two papers which proved an opportunity to share initial research and research actions for the WCE initiative and PhD research.

The presentations were well received by the international audience and provided an opportunity for both discussion and feedback.

After leaving NZ, the three also presented at the 25th National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference (NCVER) conference in Sydney.

This presentation focused on Positive Transformations: Community driven solutions for further education in remote and very remote communities of the Northern Territory and outlined several case studies developing through work with communities.  

Our presentations

The presentations were entitled:

  • Understanding Mentoring experiences in remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, Australia: A research strategy for building aspiration and expectation for participation in Higher Education’ and
  • Enhancing Aboriginal teachers’ professional inclusion and resilience through digital technologies

​I joined the team in April 2016, just in time for the team meeting at Tennant Creek, where it was realised that the team needed someone to analyse the data that was being generated across the different communities.
