Yirrkala
Many senior people from the Yirrkala community have expressed both passion for strengthening education pathways in Yirrkala
Yirrkala is Yolŋu community located in the East Arnhem region. Yirrkala and surrounding homelands have undergone many years of change resulting from bauxite mining which began in the 1950s. The town of Nhulunbuy (Gove) was built to provide infrastructure to the mine workers which is a fifteen minute drive from Yirrkala.

Metaphors are often used by community members to guide people and express their thinking, visions and reflections. The WCE team in Yirrkala used the Garma and Yambirrpa metaphors throughout the time of the initiative.
I joined the team in April 2016, just in time for the team meeting at Tennant Creek, where it was realised that the team needed someone to analyse the data that was being generated across the different communities.
Being a part of the WCE Initiative has been a wonderful experience and I have learnt so much from being a part of this team with such diverse backgrounds that supported each other throughout the initiative.
